The Irish Immigration

The United States has been exposed

to many waves of immigration over time.

An ancestor of mine was one of these people

from Ireland.  This is her story.

Margaret Brosnahan was born around 1869 in Castleisland County Kerry Ireland. She grew up in Ireland for 16 years until her aunt Nora brought her over to the U.S. around 1885. Her aunt Nora worked for a Rich family in New York City and was able to get Margaret a job as a cook for a wealthy family in Boston. There she met her husband Albert Burgess who came from Liverpool, England and was the coachman for the same family. They had five children together: Jack, Albert Jr., Margaret, George E., and Alfred. Around 1904 Albert took Jack, the oldest son, with him back to England to see his family in Liverpool. He decided to stay there and abandoned Margaret. Jack later died trying to swim the English Channel. Margaret when back to Ireland the same year and planed to stay there. In 1909 The youngest son, Alfred, contracted Polio. Margaret, knowing that Irelands hospitals werent that good, moved back to the United States were Alfred was treated at Massachusetts general hospital. Margaret lived there until 1942 when she died of old age.
